It is renowned for its excellence in research and its strength in medical and social sciences.   <\/p>\n<p>This post provides a brief overview of a systematic study by researchers at the University of Groningen on the effectiveness of family constellations in supporting mental health.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Intuitive practice or evidence-based therapy? Science provides the answer. <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Family Constellations method has long been considered one of the most intuitively powerful tools for discovering and unravelling deep inner patterns. But is this influence simply a subjective experience, or does it also have a sound scientific basis? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>2021. In 2008, researchers at the University of Groningen published an in-depth  <\/span><b>systematic research<\/b> (see <a href=\"#allikaviide\">references<\/a>)<span> to assess <\/span><b>the impact of family constellations on mental health.<\/b><span>. The results of this study are significant for anyone who wants to understand,  <\/span><i><span>either <\/span><\/i><span>constellation therapy works.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Study: what does the science say?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study was conducted by Barna Konkoly Thege (University of Toronto), Carla Petroll (University of Hamburg), Carlos Rivas (European Graduate School) and Salome Scholtens (University Medical Center Groningen). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the <strong>first scientific review<\/strong> focusing specifically on quantitative and time-measured (prospective) studies of the impact of family constellation therapy on mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Key facts:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">The systematic review started with <strong>an analysis of 4197 records<\/strong> from scientific and professional databases. Following strict inclusion criteria, <strong>12 studies<\/strong> (568 participants in total) representing 10 independent samples were selected, focusing on the effects of family constellation therapy on mental health. <\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The surveys covered a range of mental health indicators, from self-esteem and family relationships to general psychopathology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 out of 12 studies showed <\/span><b>statistically significant positive changes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after constellation therapy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meta-analysis (based on 5 studies) highlighted the following. <\/span><b>a positive effect of moderate size<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reduction in overall psychopathology (Hedges' g = 0.531).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results of the study convincingly suggest that the scientific basis for family constellations is emerging and the method has measurable therapeutic potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are not just subjective customer impressions. The surveys on which the review was based were   <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">longitudinal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  - this means that participants' condition was measured before and after the intervention. This allows for a much more reliable assessment of causality than retrospective or qualitative interviews. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the study highlighted:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tolerance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Seven studies also looked at possible negative side effects. Although four of them reported some mild side effects (e.g. emotional instability in a small proportion of participants), this was   <\/span><b>only 5-8%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and related to intense experience - similar to other therapies.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, short-term emotional reactions (e.g. fatigue, confusion) were experienced as side effects, but these were usually temporary and <\/span><b>may have resolved spontaneously, or even led to a better outcome in a later follow-up assessment.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as described by Langlotz (2005, 2006).<br \/><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results of the meta-analysis were <\/span><b>confidence interval for the effect size 0.39-0.68<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, indicating a stable moderate effect. Statistical significance was very high (p &lt; 0.001) and there was no significant variability between studies (I\u00b2 = 0%). <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diverse applicability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The method has been used successfully in the general population, in prisons, with trauma patients and even in pedagogy - giving an idea of its flexibility.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why are such studies important?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today's citizens are increasingly looking for evidence-based practices - especially in the field of mental well-being.
