The effects of emotional manipulation can be very severe.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A relationship like this\u2014whether romantic, professional, or a friendship\u2014can gradually erode your self-esteem and make you feel as though you\u2019re constantly at fault or \u201cin the wrong.\u201d  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>That is precisely why it is important to recognize patterns of emotional manipulation.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou\u2019re overreacting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI did it just for you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIf you really loved me, you wouldn\u2019t say that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEveryone else understands me, but you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first glance, these may not seem \u201cdangerous.\u201d But when we hear them repeatedly, they begin to have a negative effect on us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the signs of emotional manipulation is<\/span><b> internal confusion.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>You might start asking yourself whether:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAm I being too sensitive?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAm I really exaggerating?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMaybe I\u2019m just imagining things?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhy do I feel so bad after that conversation, when nothing bad actually happened?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>A systemic perspective: the invisible relationships that shape us<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A systemic approach views a person not in isolation, but within the context of their relationships and background.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t enter a relationship with a \u201cclean slate.\u201d We bring with us communication styles learned in childhood, unspoken family rules, loyalties (e.g., \u201cI must not be stronger than my mother\u201d or \u201cI must always keep the peace\u201d), and past experiences where our emotions weren\u2019t safe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These patterns are not always recognized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional manipulation can occur in this system when one person\u2019s old pattern \u201cclicks\u201d with another person\u2019s vulnerability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How manipulation actually works<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a person begins to constantly question their own perceptions, changes begin to take place. Self-confidence wanes, boundaries become blurred, decision-making becomes more difficult, a constant inner tension arises, and one begins to suppress their own feelings <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most significant change, however, is that you start to trust yourself less than you trust other people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Good news: becoming visible changes the pattern<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the principles of systemic work is that <\/span><b>what becomes visible can be changed.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What can a systematic approach help you do when faced with emotional manipulation?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A systematic approach does not seek to assign blame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>This helps you recognize recurring relationship patterns, understand where they might come from, reconnect with your own feelings, distinguish between \u201cmy feelings\u201d and \u201clearned reactions,\u201d and set clearer boundaries without feeling guilty.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a process in which a person learns not only to say \u201cno,\u201d but also to listen to themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If something seems confusing, uncomfortable, or \u201ctoo difficult
