Overthinking: How to Quiet Excessive Thoughts and Find Inner Peace

Do you feel like your thoughts never stop? Like every new thought leads to endless analysis?
You're not alone. Overthinking – in English overthinking – is a phenomenon that affects many of us, causing stress, anxiety, and decision-making paralysis.
What is overthinking?
Overthinking occurs when our brain tries too hard to exert control and create clarity. This may seem helpful, but it often prevents us from taking action and enjoying the moment. Thoughts repeat themselves, various scenarios are imagined, and risks are exaggerated. The result is a tense mind and a poor sense of well-being.
Why do we overthink things?
The desire for perfection: the desire to do everything “perfectly.”
Fear of making a mistake: the fear of making the wrong decision.
Past experiences and patterns: expectations from family or the workplace and past traumas can reinforce the inner critic.
Systemic effects: as constellation practitioners demonstrate, our decisions and reactions can also be influenced by the experiences of previous generations, as well as by unseen loyalties and patterns.
How can I stop overthinking?
Be mindful of your thoughts
Notice when you start going around in circles with the same train of thought. Simple mindful breathing or keeping a journal can help you spot these patterns.
Separate your thoughts from your actions
Write down different possibilities, but choose one step you can take right away. Taking action breaks the cycle of thoughts.
Set boundaries
Give yourself a specific amount of time to make decisions. For example: “I’ll think about this for 10 minutes and then make a decision.”
Allow yourself a break and some relaxation
Exercise, meditation, spending time in nature, or simply deep breathing reduces mental tension and creates space for clarity.
Turning Overthinking into an Opportunity
If you can consciously stop overthinking, it actually becomes a valuable tool. You can begin to analyze situations more deeply without getting bogged down in them.
